Brady Bunch Sheriff an accused Meth Dealer

You know what they say about absolute power corrupting absolutely…

One of the reasons I am so opposed to the government being involved in your Second Amendment rights is that it takes the power away from you and puts it in their hands.

In the hands of people like the former Republican Sheriff of Arapahoe County, Patrick Sullivan.

Sullivan made a habit of helping out groups like the Brady Campaign when it came to preventing law-abiding citizens from exercising their Second Amendment rights.

He even testified before Congress for Handgun Control in favor of the Brady bill, and in the State Capitol against any concealed carry reform.

During his 18-year tenure as Arapahoe County Sheriff, Sullivan was a poster boy for big government and was bestowed the title of national “Sheriff of the Year” in 2001 for his efforts at infringing your rights – even at a national level.

Forest Service Says No More Hunting or Shooting.

July 27, 2011

I cannot tell you how I often I hear about a new government scheme to close off public lands previously open to gun owners.

This time it hits close to home.

Recently, the U.S. Forest Service called for an emergency closure of 132 acres of forest land on the Boulder Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests, most of which was previously open to gun owners and shooters.

An "environmental assessment" is being conducted, and a number of alternatives are being considered for the land.

Make it known to the U.S. Forest Service that you are opposed to closing public lands for recreational use and hunting.

I have prepared a suggested sample comment for you to leave with the U.S. Forest Service:

As a hunter, shooter and gun rights activist, I am concerned with the U.S. Forest Service's emergency closure of 132 acres of forest land on the Boulder Ranger District of the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests. Recreational shooters and hunters have seen acre after acre of public lands disappear in recent years not only here in Colorado but also all over the country. I would like to make it clear to the U.S. Forest Service that I am 100% opposed to this closure.

Click this link to send your message to the U.S. Forest Service

As more and more of our lands are closed by the federal government, shooters and gun owners are experiencing an unprecedented shrinking of available lands for recreational use and hunting.

Make sure you get in on this fight. Don't let them take this one, too.

Sincerely,

Dudley Brown
Executive Director, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

Call Your Sheriff

July 20, 2011

Yesterday, I alerted you that some county sheriffs, deputies, police officers and administrators throughout Colorado may not be aware of a change in Colorado law that took effect July 1.

As you know by now, on July 1, sheriffs are no longer allowed to load concealed weapon permit holder information into the state's criminal database, the CCIC. The database was also required by law to be wiped clean of concealed weapon permit holder data.

Demand that law enforcement be alerted to the change in the law and make clear that gun owners will not tolerate any violation.

My staff has compiled two lists. The first lists the counties that have previously participated in entering information into the CCIC. If you live in one of those counties, please call.

The second lists counties that have not previously or recently refused to enter CCW information into the CCIC. I have listed email addresses. Please thank those counties for not participating in the CCIC by sending an email.

The numbers I have listed below are "Non-Emergency" telephone numbers.

Please find your county listed below and make the call or email today.

Read more: Call Your Sheriff

Stop CCIC Entry

Criminals, sex offenders and . . .

. . . concealed weapon permit holders.

For years, the State of Colorado has stored personal, private information about permit holders in the same database as the most dangerous individuals in Colorado.

Unfortunately, many sheriffs in Colorado voluntarily offer up private data about concealed weapons permit holders in their county to the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC).

That's right, your personal information is stored in a "Crime" information center -- all because you went through the trouble of getting a concealed weapons permit.

The private information stored in Colorado's concealed weapon permit holder database includes, but is not limited to, your:

>>> Social Security number;

>>> Driver's license number;

>>> Occupation;

>>> Home address and telephone number.

But that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Your private information is available to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) -- at any time -- subject to be passed onto the FBI's national gun owner database at Quantico, VA.

I do have some good news.

Soon, you and I can stop this unconstitutional collection of private data.

Thanks to the efforts of Rocky Mountain Gun Owners, beginning July 1, it will be illegal for ANY sheriff to share ANY information about concealed weapon permit holders with ANY law enforcement agency for the purpose of creating a database of permit holders.

But that's not all.

ALL information concerning concealed weapon permit holders contained within the CCIC MUST BE REMOVED no later than July 1.

You read that correctly.

The CCIC must be wiped clean of gun owner data by July 1!

I would love to say that you and I will wake up July 2 with our private information no longer collected within a Colorado state government database . . .

. . . but I have to tell you, that is not a sure thing.

With anti-gun Democrat Governor John Hickenlooper sitting in the Governor's mansion anything is possible, even an executive order extending the life of this illegal collection of personal data.

You and I must be prepared in case Governor Hickenlooper or CBI bureaucrats decide to stick it to Colorado gun owners.

In fact, I was so certain that you would support a legal challenge to make sure this information is no longer collected -- and destroy what currently exists -- I have gone ahead and filed legal papers.

But taking on Governor Hickenlooper, and the CCIC, won't be cheap.

That's why I'm counting on you to help me cobble together a "Delete the Database" war chest of $20,000.

Can you afford to help fill the war chest with a generous contribution of $500, $100, $50 or whatever you can afford?

I plan on being in Downtown Denver at the headquarters of the CBI on July 5 demanding to receive personal confirmation that the concealed weapon permit holder database has been deleted and is no longer collecting data.

If I find out that the database continues to collect, store and function as an illegal collection of private information about permit holders, I want to be able to file in court -- IMMEDIATELY!

Will you chip in to support this effort?

Not only am I passionate about protecting your ability to carry here in Colorado but also your ability to carry without ANY government agency knowing that you do.

For years, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners has fought against this illegal collection and storing of data on your behalf.

Now, you and I have an opportunity to end it once and for all.

Will you join me in this battle?

Sincerely,

Dudley Brown
Executive Director, Rocky Mountain Gun Owners

P.S. The State of Colorado is collecting personal, private data about concealed weapons permit holders in a criminal database.

On July 1, Colorado law requires the database to be eliminated and wiped clean -- but only if Governor Hickenlooper doesn't intervene to extend its' life.

Please help fill the "Delete the Database" war chest by making a generous contribution of $500, $100, $50 or whatever you can afford.

Republican Leadership Causing Problems With Patriot Act.

5/26/11

Your calls are getting to Harry Reid!

Senior Senate sources told me this morning that Senate chief Harry Reid has buckled under the avalanche of phone calls from gun owners like you, and has promised to allow full votes on all amendments to the mis-named Patriot Act, INCLUDING Senator Rand Paul’s pro-gun amendment.

However, I’ve got some bad news.

Reid’s conspirators in Republican leadership are desperate to protect the Police-State that the Patriot Act enshrines, which is scheduled to expire tonight.

Republican leaders Mitch McConnell and Jon Kyl are blocking a vote on Senator Paul’s amendment which would protect gun owners from Patriot Act searches.

Clearly McConnell and Kyl didn’t get the message that gun owners sent in the last election.

They need to hear from you RIGHT NOW!

Please call Senator Mitch McConnell at (202) 224-2541 and Senator Jon Kyl at (202) 224-4521. Tell them that gun owners – and all Americans – demand a full up or down vote on Rand Paul’s pro-gun amendment to the mis-named Patriot Act.

Once you’ve called Republican leadership, please, call both your senators again. Even if you’ve already done it, they need to hear from you again.

Call Senator Bennett at (202) 224-5852 and Senator Udall at (202) 224-5941 and demand they stand up for gun owners and support Rand Paul’s pro-gun amendment to the Patriot Act. Tell them that gun owners – and all Americans -- demand protection from the Patriot Act-Police state.

Please, don’t wait to make these calls.

Action on the Patriot Act will come this afternoon, and Republican leadership and your senators need to hear from you.

Right now…

For Liberty,

The ATF Wants Your Shotgun

The ATF Wants Your Shotgun

Did you know the ATF is trying to re-define the law?

And they’ve got their anti-gun sights set on your SHOTGUN.

In January, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives released a document announcing a study that would dramatically tighten regulations on shotguns.

With the tacit approval of the Obama Administration, the ATF hopes to use bureaucratic rule changes to ban the importation and sale of certain shotguns based on their twisted view of the “sporting purposes” clause in the 1968 Gun Control Act.

There’s one major problem.

Constitutional Carry Dead in Colorado.

Constitutional Carry Dead in Colorado
Senate Dems kill landmark pro-gun legislation

Though not a surprise, yesterday the Senate State Affairs Committee voted 3-2 to kill HB1205, RMGO's Constitutional Carry bill, which was carried by St. Rep. Chris Holbert and St. Sen. Greg Brophy.

The legislation would have made Colorado a “permit optional” state for concealed carry, joining Vermont, Alaska, Arizona, and Wyoming.

Despite overwhelming testimony that states with similar laws did not, in fact, see an increase in violence, Democrat Senators in the State Affairs Committee (Sens. Rollie Heath, Betty Boyd, and Bob Bacon) voted against the bill while GOP Sens. Kevin Grantham and Bill Cadman voted for the legislation.

State Senator Greg Brophy (front) and RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown testify in favor of HB1205 on March 23, 2011. Click the image to watch the testimony.

Senator Greg Brophy told committee members that HB1205 would simply level the playing field for law-abiding citizen, but criminals really don’t care what the law says – and don’t seek permits in the first place.

RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown said that domestic violence prevention groups should support Constitutional Carry rather than oppose it, since the permit process itself is intimidating to many females who don’t want to be on lists and don’t normally think of themselves as gun advocates but might need the means to self defense in volatile situations.

“Why should a woman who wants to defend herself from a stalker or violent ex-boyfriend be forced to acquire an expensive permit, just for the permission to protect herself?” said Brown.

Yuma County Sheriff Chad Day, testifying on behalf of himself and Weld County Sheriff John Cooke, said the Second Amendment is a right.  “Causing people to jump through government hoops turns that right into a mere privilege.”  Sheriff Day cited numerous statistics to show that more citizens carrying concealed is a good thing for public safety.

Of course, Sheriff Day wasn’t the only law enforcement to speak on the bill.  Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle (representing “Republican-In-Name-Only” Arapahoe Sheriff Grayson Robinson and Adams County Sheriff Doug Darr) opposed the bill.

Lobbyist Anne Marie Jensen, who represented the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police but also normally works for Tom Mauser’s “Colorado Ceasefire Capitol Fund”, said “Sen. Brophy believes more guns will make citizens safer.  Unfortunately, the Chiefs don’t agree.”

Those advocating for Constitutional Carry should take heart: it took 9 years to pass a “Shall Issue” law in Colorado, and this is a long-term fight.  Just remember these votes in the 2012 elections.

RMGO has fought for Constitutional Carry (often called Vermont) since the founding of the group.  And as the famous movie line goes, We’ll be back.

Colorado House Passes Constitutional Carry 40 to 25

3/2/2011

We aren’t done, but I’ve got some good news for you.

The first phase of passing Constitutional Carry through the Colorado State House was accomplished this morning.  House members agreed to move this common-sense legislation forward by a vote of 40 to 25 (we'll post this vote when it becomes available on our website).

Even though we’re definitely not done yet (and I know that I don’t have to tell you that anything can happen in politics) this is still great news.

Because of your emails and phone calls, these House members have moved our bill through the house with an overwhelming majority.

A special thanks to the able leadership of long-time RMGO member State Rep. Chris Holbert (left), who now passes the baton to State Senator Greg Brophy (right).

Our next step is the assignment of the bill to a Colorado State Senate Committee.

Naturally, we'll keep you up to date on Colorado's Constitutional Carry Bill moves along.

NOTE ABOUT RECIPROCITY:

For those who still want – and have acquired – a Colorado concealed handgun permit, this bill wouldn’t change anything.  Literally, zero would change.

But, if you’re a law-abiding citizen who doesn’t want to go through the trouble and expensive of acquiring a permit, you could still carry in Colorado.

If passed (it’s a long shot, with this State Senate and Governor), many people would still get/keep their permits, for a number of reasons, including carrying in other states where we have reciprocity agreements.

Gunrunners And Gunwalkers

2/28/2011

Federal law enforcement is conspiring against your rights.

It sounds like a plot-line from a bad action movie on late night cable.

Unfortunately, it’s also true.

David Codrea from The Examiner has put together an astonishing work of investigative journalism showing just how deep and tangled the web of lies is that the ATF has woven.

Originally, the ATF – using their “Project Gunrunner” – set out to show just how many firearms were being bought in the United States and smuggled into Mexico.

But the numbers didn’t add up quite the way the ATF wanted them to, so…

…they made up their own.

In an ongoing investigation he dubbed “Project Gunwalker,” Codrea has obtained evidence that the ATF not only made up some of the numbers, but they openly allowed several weapons to walk across the border in the hands of drug-runners so they could pad their stats and secure more funding.

I wish I were making this up, but sadly, it gets worse.

According to ATF agents, one of the firearms allowed to cross the border illegally was used in a December 2010 shooting...

...A shooting that cost the life of a U.S. Border Patrol Agent.

The articles on The Examiner go into much more detail, but for me, this was more than enough.

An over-funded, power-hungry and entirely unnecessary law enforcement agency enables criminals to do their worst simply so they can grab even more funding and power.

And a law enforcement agent loses his life in the process.

It has become so bad within the ATF that numerous agents have refused to step forward to tell their story due to their concerns regarding how high up in the Justice Department this scandal could go.

Maybe all the way to the top.

Perhaps even to the Obama inner circle. Remember their mantra: “never let a crisis go to waste."

Let me make a prediction: when federal agencies are begging Congress for funding, the ATF is going to spin this in a way that excuses their incompetence due to a lack of funding.

And they are going to ask for more.

They will cry and whine that they weren’t able to do enough with what they have, so they should be given more power and more money in order to have a further reach.

But that’s not a prediction – just this week, that’s exactly what happened.

In the latest budget proposal, the ATF has asked for almost 200 new agents, and $54 million in slush funds... money we all know will be used for stings against mere paperwork violations and general mayhem within the firearms community.

Our plan is to quash this budget increase.

But the sad fact of the matter is that most members of Congress don’t even know about Project Gunwalker.

After all, would you know about it from watching Fox News, CNN or ABC?

They won’t even touch this story.

And that’s where you come in.

I need you to make your Congressman aware of what is happening inside the ATF.

David Codrea has done a great job at The Examiner of exposing this story and informing a large number of people.

I want every member of Congress to know about this abuse of the law and to know how much the ATF has run amok with its power.

If they don’t know, the ATF will just grow and grow with unchecked power and increased funding.

And don’t expect the institutional “gun lobby” to oppose budget increases and power expansions at the ATF – they’ve been in bed with them for decades.

Remember, the ATF is the organization tasked with enforcing gun control.

Do you want this kind of abuse to happen once they start enforcing some sort of draconian new Obama Administration gun law?

What if another assault weapons ban passes? The ATF will be given even more money and more power to enforce unconstitutional laws.

That is what will happen... unless you alert your Congressman to this illegal activity going on at the top levels of the ATF.

Call your Senators and Congressman and let them know about Project Gunwalker and the insidious abuses of power within the ATF.

They have to be stopped now before more law enforcement officers and law-abiding citizens lose their lives.

Show Congress that limiting government powers – the mandate you sent them to Washington with in the 2010 elections – includes over-zealous, redundant law enforcement agencies drunk with their own power.

Tell them about law enforcement agents dying because the ATF thinks it knows what’s best for our country.

Project Gunrunner must be exposed.

And that won’t happen until more members of Congress know about it. I need you to make that happen.

After all, Laws are meaningless if the people enforcing them think they are above them.

You can read the original Examiner article here .

House Judiciary Committee Passes Constitutional Carry 8 to 3

2/25/2011

House Judiciary Committee passes Constitutional Carry 8 to 3. But we still need your help.

Nice work.  Constitutional Carry -- HB1205 -- passed out of its committee yesterday and moved to the House Floor thanks to your calls and e-mails.

State Rep. Chris Holbert (R-Parker) -- who is a long-time RMGO member and activist -- did a fantastic job of presenting the bill and framing the debate when presenting it to the House Judiciary Committee.

Rep. Holbert told the committee that open carry in public areas is legal in most parts of Colorado and requires no permit, no fees, no training and no lists, but the second you cover the handgun with a coat or sweater you are required to obtain a permit.

In essence, he said, it's a Coat Tax.  Put your coat on, and you have to pay the tax.  His bill would make that a voluntary tax, since there would be no need to pay the tax (acquire a permit) if HB1205 becomes law.

RMGO Executive Director Dudley Brown then testified to the growing movement of states allowing permitless carry, and the many more which are considering passing just such a law.  In Vermont, Alaska and now Arizona, there has been no increase in crime.

Both of those messages resonated with members of the committee, and the bill passed with the votes of every Republican and even two Democrats.

This is just one more great example of how effective your voice really is.

Now the work gets tougher.  The bill is headed for the House floor, where we really have to turn up the heat.  If you and I want Constitutional Carry in Colorado, we must make politicians feel the heat with our phone calls and e-mails.

The House Co-sponsors on HB1205 are:

Acree, Balmer, Barker, Baumgardner, Becker, Bradford, Brown, Conti, DelGrosso, Holbert, Joshi, Kerr J., Looper, Massey, McKinley, McNulty, Murray, Nikkel, Priola, Scott, Sonnenberg, Stephens, Summers, Swerdfeger, Vaad, Waller.

In addition, Reps. Bob Gardner, Daniel Kagan and Pete Lee have now voted for this bill in Committee.

If you don't see your State Representative on either of these lists, they have not yet co-sponsored this bill or voted in favor of it yet.  It is imperative that you take just a few minutes to do this simple two-step process before the House floor vote.

If they are on this list, take a moment to contact them and tell them to keep up the good work and continue to support this important bill.

1) Click on this link to find your State Representative if you don't already know.

2) Call your Representative.  The phone number for all State Representatives is 303-866-2904 or toll free at 1-800-811-7647.

  • Tell them you stand with Rocky Mountain Gun Owners.
  • Tell them it is vital they support Constitutional Carry in Colorado without further amendments.
  • And tell them you are watching their vote carefully and counting on their support.

Again, you can reach all State Representatives by calling 303-866-2904 or toll free at 1-800-811-7647 and they'll connect you to your State Representative.

Constitutional Carry in Colorado depends on your involvement.

Please join us in the push to get this bill past the House.
